Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a mirror surface most of the day with the glass holding level. Start the search at Lac Oille along the margins and the shelf beyond them. Numbers are low everywhere; the morning is the pick of them. Go lighter and slower than usual. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

The Abitibi-Témiscamingue end of Quebec holds Lac Oille. Elevation runs to 355 metres. Surface area runs to about 3 hectares — small enough to read in one session. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Val-d'Or sits 114 km from here and is the nearest stop. After that come Deep River at 116 km and Saint-Boniface at 122 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Open biodiversity records for Abitibi-Témiscamingue list northern pike, yellow perch, walleye and white sucker. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Lac Oille gives up more to patience than to distance.
Average temperature peaks around 17°C in July and bottoms out near -16°C in January. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late April. Ice clears near late April and comes back about late November in a typical year. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Lac Oille runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Failing this one, try Lac du Naphte, 0.3 km away. Where Lac Oille is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
