A crisp, open sky after dark, with a kind NW breeze on the water with the barometer flat. Start the search at Lac Noir along points where shallow meets deep. Not a day the forecast likes; the morning keeps a flicker of interest. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Lac Noir is a Capitale-Nationale water, in Quebec. The sea is 22 km distant. It runs to roughly 22 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Roughly 3.1 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. On our Capitale-Nationale list it sits near the top for size. Nearest town is Saint-Ubalde, 11 km off. Saint-Marc-des-Carrières is 14 km away, with Portneuf at 22 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Capitale-Nationale records list lake sturgeon, Atlantic sturgeon, longnose sucker, sauger and channel catfish among the fish reported. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Work Lac Noir in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Climate records put July near 18°C and January near -14°C. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. After late April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly late November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Plan any trip to Lac Noir around it.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Lac Noir sits about 460 m away and carries the launch. Omble de fontaine is the mapped fishing point, 410 m out. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Failing this one, try Lac Beaudoin, 1 km away. None of that is settled for Lac Noir in what we hold.
