Overcast skies today, with dead-still conditions and the barometer holding steady. Most of the action on Lac Nioche should come off reed fringes and open pockets. The numbers single out the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Lac Nioche falls in Nord-du-Québec, part of Quebec. It lies 397 metres above sea level. The water covers some 11 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Shoreline comes to about 1.4 km, small enough to learn in a day. Most waters listed here for Nord-du-Québec are larger. Head to Chibougamau, 68 km away, for anything you forgot. The big place round here is Saguenay, 248 km distant. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Nord-du-Québec records list Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout and lake whitefish among the fish reported. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. At Lac Nioche light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Expect July to average close to 16°C, with January the cold end at about -19°C. Winter owns most of the year at this latitude. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. In an average year the thaw lands around early May and the freeze near mid November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Lac Nioche runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Our records carry no access rule either way. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. The nearest alternative is Lac Cronos, 2.5 km out. Nothing here settles the position at Lac Nioche for certain.
