Soft grey light all day today, with a whisper of wind from the S with the barometer flat. Most of the action on Lac Mouton should come off windblown banks where food collects. Numbers are low everywhere; the evening is the pick of them. Lower the pace and stay patient. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

In Quebec, Lac Mouton belongs to Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean. The ground round it is spruce and muskeg. Roughly 1.60 sq km of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. The perimeter runs near 10 km, so plan the walk before you start. On our Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean list it sits near the top for size. Saint-Fulgence lies 62 km from the water. Sacré-Coeur follows at 68 km, then Saint-Honoré at 69 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. County-wide records name northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. On Lac Mouton a short move beats a long cast.
July runs about 15°C on average, January about -19°C. The season is measured in weeks rather than months. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around mid May. Averages place the thaw at mid May and the freeze at early November. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Plan around that when you fish Lac Mouton.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Lac Jacques, 1.1 km away, makes the obvious fallback. None of that is settled for Lac Mouton in what we hold.
