A grey, even sky over the water, with just enough SSW wind to ripple the surface and steady pressure. Fish at Lac Mercy should hold close to sheltered bays and points. Little to get excited about, though the morning holds a sliver of promise. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Quebec holds Lac Mercy, in Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Around the bank it is spruce and muskeg. It covers about 9 hectares, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. The bank runs about 2.1 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Senneterre sits 105 km from the bank. The nearest city of size is Gatineau, 279 km away. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Open biodiversity records for Abitibi-Témiscamingue list northern pike, yellow perch, walleye, white sucker and brown bullhead. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. At Lac Mercy light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Long-run averages give July about 16°C and January about -18°C. Little of the calendar is open water, so timing counts for everything. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough early May. On average, early May opens the water and mid November closes it again. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. That is the shape of the year on Lac Mercy.
No public source sets out the position on this bank. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Lac Brass, 1.6 km away, makes the obvious fallback. None of that is settled for Lac Mercy in what we hold.
