A closed sky with even light today, with hardly a ripple anywhere and pressure going nowhere. Whatever swims in Lac McDonald should be near the shallows early and the drop later. The forecast is against you; the night is the least bad option. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly.

Lac McDonald is an Abitibi-Témiscamingue water, in Quebec. Elevation runs to 254 metres. With some 33 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Around 3.5 km of margin, front to back. Notre-Dame-du-Lac is the closest place, 9.7 km off. After that come Témiscaming at 12 km and Mattawa at 46 km. Being near a boundary, it pays to know which side you are fishing.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Records held for Abitibi-Témiscamingue cover northern pike, yellow perch, walleye, white sucker and brown bullhead. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. On Lac McDonald a short move beats a long cast.
Seasonal averages run from -13°C in January up to 18°C in July. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Winter locks it down, and late April brings it back. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly late November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. On Lac McDonald the same rules apply, with local timing.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Should this one be busy, Lac David is 2 km off. None of that is settled for Lac McDonald in what we hold.
