Bands of rain crossing through the day, with a faint SW drift and the barometer holding steady. Lac McCool should fish best around windblown banks where food collects today. The forecast is against you; the evening is the least bad option. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

The Outaouais end of Quebec holds Lac McCool. The country round it is rolling bush from end to end. Surface area is around 41 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Bank access stretches around 3.8 km in total. Few waters listed in Outaouais are bigger. Start from Deep River, 16 km down the road. After that come Chalk River at 17 km and Petawawa at 25 km. This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. County-wide records name pumpkinseed, yellow perch and smallmouth bass. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Lac McCool gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Average temperature peaks around 18°C in July and bottoms out near -14°C in January. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. The open-water window runs from around late April to about late November in an average year. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Plan any trip to Lac McCool around it.
Our records carry no access rule either way. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. If the gate is shut, Lac Rainville at 1.5 km is the nearest alternative. Where Lac McCool is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
