Heavy overcast holding through the day, with stillness over the whole water and pressure sitting still. The water to cover at Lac Mate is the shaded margin through bright spells. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Lac Mate sits within Abitibi-Témiscamingue in Quebec. The setting is mixed forest. Saint-Boniface is the closest place, 112 km off. Then Val-d'Or, 115 km, and Senneterre, 120 km. Others within reach: 0.4 km away is Lac Alizari, Lac Reuland at about 0.6 km, 4.4 km away is Lac Pectine, Lac des Algues at about 4.6 km and 4.7 km away is Lac Ovibos. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Species logged across Abitibi-Témiscamingue include northern pike, yellow perch, walleye, white sucker and brown bullhead. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Lac Mate that means starting tight and working out.
Long-run averages give July about 17°C and January about -17°C. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly early May. Averages suggest open water from about early May through to roughly late November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. That is the shape of the year on Lac Mate.
We hold no note on access for this one. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Failing this one, try Lac Alizari, 0.4 km away. Confirm before you fish Lac Mate.
