Blue sky from bank to bank today, with just enough S wind to ripple the surface with the glass holding level. Give the shaded margin through bright spells the first hour at Lac Makwa. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

The Outaouais entry here is Lac Makwa, in Quebec. It sits in mixed forest country. It runs to roughly 12 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. A shoreline of some 2.1 km keeps the choices simple. Maniwaki lies 14 km from the water. Saint-Raphaël follows at 15 km, then Saint-Boniface at 20 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Reported across Outaouais: pumpkinseed, yellow perch and smallmouth bass. The county list is broader than any single water. On Lac Makwa that means starting tight and working out.
Between January at about -14°C and July at about 18°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around late April. The season between ice runs from about late April to late November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Lac Makwa runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. The nearest alternative is Lac Kidabigahiwinini, 0.6 km out. Check the position at Lac Makwa before loading the car.
