Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a light SSW breeze with a settled glass. The water to cover at Lac Mahard is bays that hold the day's warmth. A grinding day likely, with the night worth the effort if any is. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

The Côte-Nord end of Quebec holds Lac Mahard. Tidal water begins 37 km from here. It covers about 4 hectares, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. Our Côte-Nord list holds plenty of bigger water. Start from Port-Cartier, 38 km down the road. Saint-Alexandre follows at 38 km, then Sept-Îles at 64 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Across Côte-Nord, recorded fish include logperch. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Anyone new to Lac Mahard should walk it once before setting up.
July runs about 15°C on average, January about -17°C. Open water arrives late and leaves early, which concentrates the fishing. Ice is part of the season here, ending near mid May. Open water usually runs from mid May until about early November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Lac Mahard runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. Public data shows nothing built here, so treat the whole approach as informal. For the perch, a small jig tipped with worm, dropped along the edges, is hard to beat. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. For a change of water, Lac des Midis de Mai is 2.3 km distant. Where Lac Mahard is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
