No direct sun expected today, with a consistent blow out of the SSW with the glass holding level. Most of the action on Lac Long d'Hiver should come off the calm side of the wind. One clear peak today: the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Lac Long d'Hiver is set in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec. It sits at 400 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 25 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The whole outline is near 3.9 km, and most of it is walkable. Nearest place of any size is Métabetchouan, 30 km away. It is 99 km to Saguenay, the nearest city. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean records list northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish among the fish reported. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. At Lac Long d'Hiver light and wind decide more than tackle does.
The seasonal spread runs -17°C to 17°C. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. The lid usually goes in early May, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Averages place the thaw at early May and the freeze at mid November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Lac Long d'Hiver fishes to that pattern most years.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. If the gate is shut, Lac des Grandes Oreilles at 1.7 km is the nearest alternative. For Lac Long d'Hiver in particular, ask before you travel.
