Solid cloud cover today, with a firm SSW blow and no real change in pressure. Expect most activity at Lac de l'Est around inflow corners and shaded margins. The day peaks in the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Set in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Lac de l'Est is a Quebec water. The ground around here is spruce and muskeg. Around 33 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. Shoreline comes to about 4.3 km, small enough to learn in a day. Few waters listed in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean are bigger. The town to know is Métabetchouan, 32 km out. Then Chambord, 33 km, and Roberval, 33 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Survey and observation records for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean include northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. On Lac de l'Est that means starting tight and working out.
The warmest month averages 17°C, the coldest about -17°C. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near early May. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about early May until roughly mid November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Anyone fishing Lac de l'Est regularly works to that calendar.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. The nearest alternative is Lac Sainte-Croix, 1.7 km out. Treat Lac de l'Est as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
