An even grey lid over the water, with a working SSW breeze and no real change in pressure. Start the search at Lac Larobel along bays that hold the day's warmth. Everything points to the night. Take the steady approach over the searching one. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

In Quebec, Lac Larobel falls inside Lanaudière. The surroundings are taiga. Surface area runs to about 5 hectares — small enough to read in one session. It is high ground by Quebec standards. Nearest town is Saint-Michel-des-Saints, 33 km off. The nearest city of size is Saint-Louis-de-Terrebonne, 128 km away. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Reported across Lanaudière: pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, rock bass and brook trout. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Fish Lac Larobel to its features, not to its size.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 17°C, while January sits near -15°C. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around early May. Climate figures give an open season running early May to mid November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lac Larobel.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. If the gate is shut, Lac Pegot at 1.1 km is the nearest alternative. Signs at Lac Larobel carry more weight than any list.
