No direct sun expected today, with mild air moving in from the SSW with the barometer flat. Activity on Lac Kumel should centre on the calm side of the wind. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Set in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Lac Kumel is a Quebec water. It sits in taiga country. At about 25 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The full circuit measures close to 3.4 km on foot. Leblanc is the closest place, 112 km off. Senneterre follows at 119 km, then Manawan at 132 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Across Abitibi-Témiscamingue, recorded fish include northern pike, yellow perch and walleye. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Lac Kumel the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Temperature averages peak at 16°C in July and bottom out at -18°C in January. The ice season is long here and the open one short. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around early May. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about early May until roughly mid November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. It holds true on Lac Kumel more years than not.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Lac Lamb at 1.4 km is the sensible second choice. Signs at Lac Kumel carry more weight than any list.
