An even grey lid over the water, with a faint SSW drift and pressure sitting still. The productive water at Lac Harnois will be around structure within a cast of the bank. A tough forecast; the evening offers the only real chance. Save the long walk for a better forecast. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Lac Harnois sits in Nord-du-Québec, out in Quebec. The setting is boreal forest on every side. About 2.67 sq km, so local knowledge or a boat saves a lot of walking. Shoreline length is close to 18 km, and each section fishes a little differently. Chapais at 66 km is the nearest place to stop. The big place round here is Saguenay, 377 km distant. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Across Nord-du-Québec, recorded fish include Arctic charr, brook trout and lake trout. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. Anyone new to Lac Harnois should walk it once before setting up.
Between January at about -20°C and July at about 16°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. The lid usually goes in early May, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Open water usually runs from early May until about mid November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Lac Harnois fishes to that pattern most years.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. If the gate is shut, Lac Ruth at 6.4 km is the nearest alternative. None of that is settled for Lac Harnois in what we hold.
