Dull, settled light over the water, with a whisper of wind from the WSW with the glass holding level. On Lac Gustave, work shallow cover and weed edges first. A slow day overall; the night is the best of a quiet lot. Scale down and fish slowly. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Lac Gustave is a Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean water, in Quebec. It sits at 795 metres above sea level. With some 11 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. There is roughly 2.4 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. It sits higher than most water we list in Quebec. The closest town, Saint-Fulgence, is 30 km away. Beyond it, La Baie at 37 km and Saint-Honoré at 39 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Species logged across Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean include northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. On Lac Gustave that means starting tight and working out.
Expect July near 15°C and January near -18°C on the long-run figures. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from mid May. The lid tends to go about mid May and return around early November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. On Lac Gustave that shapes the whole year.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Lac Vatcher, 0.9 km away, makes the obvious fallback. None of that is settled for Lac Gustave in what we hold.
