Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with light air out of the S and steady pressure. On Lac Gagnon, work windblown banks where food collects first. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the morning. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Lac Gagnon is a Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean water, Quebec side. The surroundings are northern bush. It runs to roughly 21 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The bank runs about 2.5 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. It sits higher than most water we list in Quebec. The nearest place of any size is Saint-Fulgence, 33 km away. For a city, Saguenay is 43 km off. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean records list northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish among the fish reported. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. Work Lac Gagnon in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Typical July readings run about 15°C; by January the average is down near -19°C. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Look for the thaw near mid May; the fishing lifts straight after. Ice clears near mid May and comes back about early November in a typical year. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Plan any trip to Lac Gagnon around it.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Lac Crevier at 0.7 km is the sensible second choice. Check the position on Lac Gagnon before loading the car.
