Soft grey light all day today, with a light chop building from the S and no real change in pressure. The productive water at Lac Carlo will be around the seam between weed and open water. Little to get excited about, though the morning holds a sliver of promise. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short.

Lac Carlo lies within the bounds of Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec. It stands 674 metres above sea level. About 8 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Quebec listings. Saint-Fulgence is the closest town at 34 km. Saint-Honoré follows at 36 km, then Chicoutimi at 44 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Across Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, recorded fish include northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Lac Carlo gives up more to patience than to distance.
Averages here run 15°C at the top of summer and -19°C at the bottom of winter. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. Once it clears, about mid May, the fishing comes on quickly. On average, mid May opens the water and early November closes it again. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. That is the shape of the year on Lac Carlo.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Recorded parking is 1.4 km off, far enough to travel light. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Lac du Poivre sits 0.4 km off and takes the overflow. For Lac Carlo, the notice at the access point is the final word.
