Damp, showery conditions today, with a whisper of wind from the SSW with the glass holding level. Whatever swims in Lac Gagnon should be near windblown banks where food collects. The morning is where the day comes good. Ride the conditions while they last. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Lac Gagnon is a Lanaudière water, Quebec side. Height above sea level is 525 metres. It runs to roughly 13 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The edge runs 1.8 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. It sits higher than most water we list in Quebec. Sainte-Marguerite-du-Lac-Masson is the closest town at 13 km. Chertsey is 17 km away, with Val-David at 17 km. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Across Lanaudière, recorded fish include pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, rock bass and brook trout. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Lac Gagnon gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Long-term averages put July at about 18°C and January near -14°C. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late April and starts locking again about late November. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lac Gagnon.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Petit lac Gagnon, 0.5 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Lac Gagnon, the notice at the access point is the final word.
