Dull, settled light over the water, with a helpful ripple pushed from the S and pressure going nowhere. Activity on Lac du Gilet should centre on points where shallow meets deep. A slow day overall; the evening is the best of a quiet lot. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Lac du Gilet is a Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean water, in Quebec. The setting is northern bush. On water this small, stealth matters more than range. On size it sits at the modest end of our Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean list. Normandin is the closest place, 20 km off. After that come Albanel at 27 km and Saint-Félicien at 32 km. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. County-wide records name northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Lac du Gilet repays a walk before the first cast.
Temperature averages peak at 17°C in July and bottom out at -18°C in January. Cold dominates the calendar on water this far north. The lid usually goes in early May, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Ice usually gives way near early May, and forms again about mid November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Lac du Gilet fishes to that pattern most years.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. Overnight stays are possible 650 m away. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. The nearest alternative is Lac du Sablier, 0.4 km out. Where Lac du Gilet is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
