A grey, even sky over the water, with just enough SSW wind to ripple the surface and pressure sitting still. Fish at Lac du Chien should hold close to the seam between weed and open water. The strongest window is the night. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Look for Lac du Chien in the Mauricie part of Quebec. The surface lies 552 metres up. The water covers some 21 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. With about 2.0 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. It sits higher than most water we list in Quebec. Leblanc at 33 km is the nearest place to stop. It is 234 km to Saguenay, the nearest city. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Species logged across Mauricie include northern pike, brook trout, walleye, yellow perch and white sucker. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. Work Lac du Chien in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Typical July readings run about 16°C; by January the average is down near -18°C. Open water arrives late and leaves early, which concentrates the fishing. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly early May. In an average year the thaw lands around early May and the freeze near mid November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. It holds true on Lac du Chien more years than not.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Should this one be busy, Lac a l'Isle is 1.5 km off. Nothing on Lac du Chien should be assumed from this page alone.
