Overcast skies today, with a whisper of wind from the SSE and pressure sitting still. Expect most activity at Lac Docteur around structure within a cast of the bank. If you must go, go in the middle of the day. Keep baits small and presentations quiet. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Lac Docteur is set in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec. The ground round it is spruce and muskeg. At roughly 3 hectares, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. Most waters listed here for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean are larger. Supplies mean a trip to Chute-aux-Outardes, 172 km off. Beyond it, Hauterive at 174 km and Betsiamites at 176 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean records list northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish among the fish reported. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. On Lac Docteur the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Expect July to average close to 15°C, with January the cold end at about -20°C. Everything is compressed into the middle of the year. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from mid May. Ice clears near mid May and comes back about early November in a typical year. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Lac Docteur runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. The nearest alternative is Lac de la Roche, 0.5 km out. For Lac Docteur in particular, ask before you travel.
