Overcast skies today, with calm air over the water with the glass holding level. On Lac de Papinachois, work the seam between weed and open water first. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Quebec holds Lac de Papinachois, in Côte-Nord. The bank is 131 metres above sea level. At some 1.39 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. Around 9.2 km of bank, which is a long day on foot. It lies lower than most water we list in Quebec. Betsiamites is the closest place, 20 km off. For a city, Saguenay is 186 km off. No border sits close enough to matter.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Côte-Nord records list logperch among the fish reported. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. The shape of Lac de Papinachois rewards a slow walk along one bank.
Average temperature peaks around 17°C in July and bottoms out near -16°C in January. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. Ice clears near early May and comes back about mid November in a typical year. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Lac de Papinachois runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. For the perch, a small jig tipped with worm, dropped along the edges, is hard to beat. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Should this one be busy, Lac Cassot is 1.6 km off. Treat access at Lac de Papinachois as something to verify.
