An even grey lid over the water, with a steady SSW wind with the glass holding level. Start the search at Lac de la Pitoune along windblown banks where food collects. If you must go, go in the middle of the day. Keep baits small and presentations quiet. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

You will find Lac de la Pitoune in Lanaudière, Quebec. Everything around it is taiga. Small at around 5 hectares: two anglers spread out cover most of it. Manawan lies 20 km from the water. Then Saint-Michel-des-Saints, 51 km, and Saint-Donat-de-Montcalm, 82 km. Near neighbours include: Lac Fer a Cheval about 1.1 km, Lac du Boise at about 1.2 km, Lac de la Hutte about 1.4 km, Lac de la Source at about 1.6 km and Lac du Bocage about 1.8 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Lanaudière records list pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, rock bass and brook trout among the fish reported. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. On Lac de la Pitoune the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
The range across the year is -16°C to 17°C. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly early May. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about early May until roughly mid November. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. The season on Lac de la Pitoune rarely departs from it.
The access position is unclear from public sources. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Lac Fer a Cheval at 1.1 km is the sensible second choice. For Lac de la Pitoune, the notice at the access point is the final word.
