Soft grey light all day today, with a consistent blow out of the SSW and the barometer holding steady. On Lac de la Grande Ile, work windblown banks where food collects first. Set the alarm around the night. Change depth before you change anything else. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Lac de la Grande Ile lies within the bounds of Mauricie, Quebec. The ground around here is taiga. Roughly 56 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. With 7.2 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. On our Mauricie list it sits near the top for size. Nearest place of any size is Leblanc, 67 km away. Then Chapais, 108 km, and Weymontachie, 116 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Survey and observation records for Mauricie include northern pike, brook trout, walleye, yellow perch and white sucker. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Anyone new to Lac de la Grande Ile should walk it once before setting up.
The year swings from about -18°C in January to roughly 16°C in July. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from early May. Ice clears near early May and comes back about mid November in a typical year. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Lac de la Grande Ile fishes to that pattern most years.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing is listed nearby for parking or launching a boat. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Lac Rose sits 1.8 km off and takes the overflow. Treat access at Lac de la Grande Ile as something to verify.
