Dull, settled light over the water, with almost no wind to speak of with a settled glass. On Lac de la Clematite, work reed fringes and open pockets first. The forecast is against you; the middle of the day is the least bad option. Short, focused sessions beat a long grind today. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

You will find Lac de la Clematite in Nord-du-Québec, Quebec. The water sits 231 metres up. Roughly 2.02 sq km of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. The perimeter runs near 13 km, so plan the walk before you start. Nearest place of any size is Matagami, 114 km away. Further out sit Waskaganish (138 km) and Moose Factory (159 km). There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Nord-du-Québec records list Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout and lake whitefish among the fish reported. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. The near bank of Lac de la Clematite is often the one people ignore.
In an average year July sits at 16°C and January at -19°C. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early May. Open water usually runs from early May until about mid November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Lac de la Clematite fishes to that pattern most years.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Lac Despreux at 4.5 km is the sensible second choice. Where Lac de la Clematite is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
