Solid cloud cover today, with dead-still conditions and the barometer holding steady. The water to cover at Lac Gay is the seam between weed and open water. Numbers are low everywhere; the middle of the day is the pick of them. Take the small wins and call it early if it dies. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Nord-du-Québec in Quebec is where Lac Gay sits. It sits at 267 metres above sea level. At about 13 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. Roughly 1.6 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. On size it sits at the modest end of our Nord-du-Québec list. Matagami at 95 km is the nearest place to stop. Waskaganish is 150 km away, with La Sarre at 151 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Across Nord-du-Québec, recorded fish include Arctic charr, brook trout and lake trout. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. Lac Gay repays a walk before the first cast.
Averages here run 16°C at the top of summer and -19°C at the bottom of winter. Cold dominates the calendar on water this far north. Once it clears, about early May, the fishing comes on quickly. Averages suggest open water from about early May through to roughly mid November. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Time your trip to Lac Gay by conditions rather than dates.
The access position is unclear from public sources. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. The nearest alternative is Lac Saint-Pe, 2.1 km out. Treat access at Lac Gay as something to verify.
