Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a helpful ripple pushed from the S with the barometer flat. Start the search at Lac Dautre along the weed line and any gaps in it. Quiet conditions all day, with the evening marginally better. Scale down and fish slowly. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Lac Dautre is one of the Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean waters in Quebec. It stands 680 metres above sea level. Compared with other Quebec water on our list, it sits high. Sacré-Coeur sits 49 km from the bank. It is 79 km to Saguenay, the nearest city. Nearby, in order: Lac Kakous some 0.4 km off, Lac Lavoie the better part of 0.9 km, Lac Gandoui some 0.9 km off, Lac Pineau the better part of 1 km and Lac Itouch some 1 km off. No border sits close enough to matter.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Species logged across Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean include northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. On Lac Dautre that means starting tight and working out.
The year swings from about -17°C in January to roughly 16°C in July. The fishing year opens late and shuts early. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near early May. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early May and starts locking again about mid November. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. Lac Dautre runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
We hold no note on access for this one. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. The nearest alternative is Lac Kakous, 0.4 km out. Where Lac Dautre is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
