A closed sky with even light today, with the water lying quiet with the barometer flat. Fish at Lac Cote should hold close to windblown banks where food collects. Not a day the forecast likes; the evening keeps a flicker of interest. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec, is where Lac Cote sits. The surroundings are taiga. At about 10 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. A shoreline of some 1.8 km keeps the choices simple. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Quebec listings. 50 km away sits Saint-Honoré, the nearest town. Saint-Ambroise lies 55 km off, Saint-Fulgence another 57 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Reported across Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean: northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. The shape of Lac Cote rewards a slow walk along one bank.
Between January at about -19°C and July at about 15°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. Count the season from break-up, usually mid May. Ice usually gives way near mid May, and forms again about early November. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Lac Cote fishes to that pattern most years.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. The nearest alternative is Lac Desmeules, 0.7 km out. Treat access at Lac Cote as something to verify.
