Dull, settled light over the water, with a whisper of wind from the ESE and no real change in pressure. On Lac Chastenet, work structure within a cast of the bank first. Save your energy for the night. Work the productive water thoroughly. A cold snap day, so work the warmest water you can find.

Set in Nord-du-Québec, Quebec, this is Lac Chastenet. The country round it is boreal forest from end to end. Roughly 8.55 sq km of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. On our Nord-du-Québec list it sits near the top for size. The closest town, Kuujjuaq, is 362 km away. Labrador City lies 377 km off, Fermont another 381 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Nothing in our records gives a depth for this one. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Across Nord-du-Québec, recorded fish include Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout and lake whitefish. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. Fish Lac Chastenet where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
On the long-term average, July reads 13°C and January reads -24°C. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Ice is part of the season here, ending near late May. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about late May until roughly late October. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Lac Chastenet runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Should this one be busy, Lac Joyant is 3.3 km off. None of that is settled for Lac Chastenet in what we hold.
