A grey, even sky over the water, with a helpful ripple pushed from the S and no real change in pressure. Whatever swims in Lac Chapleau should be near the calm side of the wind. One clear peak today: the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Look for Lac Chapleau in the Laurentides part of Quebec. It stands 263 metres above sea level. Roughly 6.13 sq km of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. At about 28 km of edge, most people fish a single area and learn it well. It ranks high for size among our Laurentides listings. La Minerve at 2.8 km is the nearest place to stop. Lac-Simon follows at 18 km, then Labelle at 18 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Species logged across Laurentides include pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, brook trout and rock bass. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Anyone new to Lac Chapleau should walk it once before setting up.
Expect July near 18°C and January near -14°C on the long-run figures. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. Climate figures give an open season running late April to late November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. The season on Lac Chapleau rarely departs from it.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Should this one be busy, Lac Bois Franc is 1.4 km off. For Lac Chapleau, the notice at the access point is the final word.
