Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a light chop building from the S and no real change in pressure. Fish at Lac Cayer should hold close to points where shallow meets deep. A stay-home graph, with the night as the one excuse to go. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Lac Cayer lies in Outaouais, in Quebec. Height above sea level is 182 metres. With some 10 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Shoreline comes to about 1.4 km, small enough to learn in a day. It lies lower than most water we list in Quebec. For a base, Maniwaki sits 6.3 km out. Saint-Raphaël follows at 9.4 km, then Saint-Boniface at 19 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Species logged across Outaouais include pumpkinseed, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, rainbow smelt and Iowa darter. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Lac Cayer responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Averages here run 19°C at the top of summer and -13°C at the bottom of winter. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. Averages place the thaw at late April and the freeze at late November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Lac Cayer fishes to that pattern most years.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. The nearest alternative is Lac Ayajiwadjwesi, 1.1 km out. Check the current arrangement for Lac Cayer.
