A grey, even sky over the water, with a kind SSW breeze on the water and no real change in pressure. Activity on Lac Caribou should centre on the weed line and any gaps in it. Little to get excited about, though the morning holds a sliver of promise. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short.

Quebec holds Lac Caribou, in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean. The surface lies 672 metres up. This is a pocket water of some 8 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. Compared with other Quebec water on our list, it sits high. The town to know is Saint-Fulgence, 51 km out. Saguenay is the closest city, 62 km away. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
We hold no depth figure for this one. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Records held for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean cover northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Read Lac Caribou for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
The year swings from about -19°C in January to roughly 15°C in July. The ice season is long here and the open one short. Count the season from break-up, usually mid May. On average, mid May opens the water and early November closes it again. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Anyone fishing Lac Caribou regularly works to that calendar.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Lac Malfait at 0.6 km is the sensible second choice.
