A grey, even sky over the water, with mild air moving in from the NW with the glass holding level. The water to cover at Lac Cantin is inflow corners and shaded margins. If you must go, go in the night. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Set in Capitale-Nationale, Lac Cantin is a Quebec water. The coast is 31 km away. Small at around 4 hectares: two anglers spread out cover most of it. It is low-lying compared with other Quebec water we list. Supplies mean a trip to Saint-Ubalde, 18 km off. Saint-Raymond is 25 km away, with Saint-Marc-des-Carrières at 25 km. Local rules may differ a few miles either side of here.
Depth figures are not published for this one. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Capitale-Nationale records list lake sturgeon, Atlantic sturgeon, longnose sucker, sauger and channel catfish among the fish reported. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Lac Cantin gives up more to patience than to distance.
The seasonal spread runs -14°C to 18°C. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Break-up sits around late April on average, with the water closing again about late November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Lac Cantin fishes to that pattern most years.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Walleye come to jigs worked slow near bottom, and to trolled crankbaits along the drops at dusk. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. The nearest alternative is Lac Drolet, 0.9 km out. Treat access at Lac Cantin as something to verify.
