Soft grey light all day today, with a whisper of wind from the S and steady pressure. Expect most activity at Lac Cacouna around the shaded margin through bright spells. Plan around the stretch from night into morning. Keep moving until you find them. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Set in Mauricie, Quebec, this is Lac Cacouna. The bank is 383 metres above sea level. With some 11 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The bank runs about 2.1 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. La Tuque sits 52 km from here and is the nearest stop. The big place round here is Trois-Rivières, 112 km distant. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Species logged across Mauricie include northern pike, brook trout, walleye, yellow perch and white sucker. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. On Lac Cacouna the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Averages here run 17°C at the top of summer and -16°C at the bottom of winter. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. Averages place the thaw at late April and the freeze at mid November. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Plan around that when you fish Lac Cacouna.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Failing this one, try Lac Roger, 0.6 km away. None of that is settled for Lac Cacouna in what we hold.
