Steady rain over the water today, with just enough SSW wind to ripple the surface with a settled glass. The water to cover at Lac Black is the weed line and any gaps in it. The strongest window is the night. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Lac Black falls in Mauricie, part of Quebec. The surroundings are boreal forest. The water covers some 11 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The whole outline is near 2.1 km, and most of it is walkable. Weymontachie sits 38 km from the bank. Manawan follows at 57 km, then Leblanc at 61 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Survey and observation records for Mauricie include northern pike, brook trout, walleye, yellow perch and white sucker. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Lac Black gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
On the long-term average, July reads 16°C and January reads -16°C. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near early May. Break-up near early May, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Lac Black fishes to that pattern most years.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Access points are not mapped for this water, which suits people who like quiet. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Should this one be busy, Lac du Bucheron is 2.4 km off. What applies at Lac Black may have changed since it was mapped.
