A grey, even sky over the water, with enough S wind to stack food downwind with the barometer flat. Lac Bernier should fish best around sheltered bays and points today. Everything points to the night. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Night
Look for Lac Bernier in Mauricie, Quebec. It stands 436 metres above sea level. At 10 hectares it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. The bank runs about 1.4 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. For a base, La Tuque sits 55 km out. Métabetchouan follows at 69 km, then Laurentides at 70 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Reported across Mauricie: northern pike, brook trout, walleye and yellow perch. The county list is broader than any single water. Anyone new to Lac Bernier should walk it once before setting up.
Averages move between -16°C in January and 17°C in July. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early May. Averages suggest open water from about early May through to roughly mid November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. On Lac Bernier the same rules apply, with local timing.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Failing this one, try Lac Langevin, 0.4 km away. Signs at Lac Bernier carry more weight than any list.
