A closed sky with even light today, with a mirror surface most of the day with the glass holding level. On Lac Atta, work bays that hold the day's warmth first. A slow day overall; the night is the best of a quiet lot. Scale down and fish slowly. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Lac Atta is one of the Abitibi-Témiscamingue listings for Quebec. The surface lies 437 metres up. It measures about 16 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. There is roughly 2.2 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. The closest town, Senneterre, is 114 km distant. Further out sit Leblanc (118 km) and Manawan (137 km). The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. County-wide records name northern pike, yellow perch, walleye, white sucker and brown bullhead. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. At Lac Atta the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
On the long-term average, July reads 16°C and January reads -18°C. Long winters and short summers set the pattern. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. Averages place the thaw at early May and the freeze at mid November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. The season on Lac Atta rarely departs from it.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. If the gate is shut, Lac Maunders at 1.3 km is the nearest alternative. Where Lac Atta is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
