Overcast skies today, with a decent SSW wind working the banks and the barometer holding steady. On Lac Altair, work points where shallow meets deep first. The forecast is against you; the night is the least bad option. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Look for Lac Altair in the Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean part of Quebec. It sits in spruce and muskeg. Surface area is around 19 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. The full circuit measures close to 2.4 km on foot. It is high ground by Quebec standards. Leblanc sits 79 km from here and is the nearest stop. Beyond it, Normandin at 82 km and Albanel at 88 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Fish documented in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean include northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. The shape of Lac Altair rewards a slow walk along one bank.
On the long-term average, July reads 16°C and January reads -18°C. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near early May. The season between ice runs from about early May to early November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. On Lac Altair that shapes the whole year.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Lac Domprel at 1.1 km is the sensible second choice. Check the position on Lac Altair before loading the car.
