Soft grey light all day today, with enough S wind to stack food downwind with the glass holding level. Give the weed line and any gaps in it the first hour at Lac Alouette. The strongest window is the night. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

You will find Lac Alouette in Mauricie, Quebec. It lies 364 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 13 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. About 1.8 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. Supplies mean a trip to La Tuque, 41 km off. After that come Laurentides at 79 km and Métabetchouan at 81 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Reported across Mauricie: northern pike, brook trout and walleye. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. At Lac Alouette the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
July runs about 17°C on average, January about -16°C. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Lac Alouette.
The paperwork position is blank for this one. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Lac Ecureuil at 2.5 km is the sensible second choice. The position on Lac Alouette is worth confirming on the day.
