Rain moving through today, with next to no ripple with a settled glass. Expect most activity at Whigham Lake around bays that hold the day's warmth. Little to get excited about, though the middle of the day holds a sliver of promise. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

The Sudbury end of Ontario holds Whigham Lake. Elevation runs to 385 metres. With some 64 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Shoreline length is close to 6.9 km, and each section fishes a little differently. Start from Chapleau, 68 km down the road. After that come Timmins at 102 km and Smooth Rock Falls at 157 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Across Sudbury, recorded fish include smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, Iowa darter and walleye. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Treat Whigham Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
Seasonal averages run from -17°C in January up to 17°C in July. Cold dominates the year and the fishing works around it. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough early May. Break-up near early May, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. At Whigham Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. For a change of water, Lita Lake is 1 km distant. Nothing here settles the position at Whigham Lake for certain.
