A grey, even sky over the water, with a gentle ripple from the SW and pressure going nowhere. Expect most activity at West Quartzite Lake around reed fringes and open pockets. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

In Ontario, West Quartzite Lake falls inside Sudbury. It stands 224 metres above sea level. Around 27 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. Bank access stretches around 4.0 km in total. Ground here is low by Ontario standards. Espanola lies 16 km from the water. Little Current follows at 18 km, then Lively at 62 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
Our records hold no depth for this water. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Species logged across Sudbury include smallmouth bass, northern pike and yellow perch. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. The near bank of West Quartzite Lake is often the one people ignore.
Typical July readings run about 19°C; by January the average is down near -11°C. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near early December: that is the shape of an average year. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. It holds true on West Quartzite Lake more years than not.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. La Cloche Ridge Conservation Reserve covers ground next to the water; its rules will apply on that side. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. If the gate is shut, Alexander Lake at 1 km is the nearest alternative. Rules at West Quartzite Lake are worth checking on the day.
