An even grey lid over the water, with a decent W wind working the banks with the barometer flat. Give reed fringes and open pockets the first hour at Elbow Lake. The useful hours run the day. Stay patient; middling days often turn late. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Elbow Lake falls in Sudbury, part of Ontario. The surroundings are rolling bush. This is a pocket water of some 7 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. Our Sudbury list holds plenty of bigger water. Supplies mean a trip to Espanola, 17 km off. It is 79 km to Greater Sudbury, the nearest city. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Survey and observation records for Sudbury include smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. Elbow Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
Average temperature peaks around 19°C in July and bottoms out near -11°C in January. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. Open water usually runs from late April until about early December. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. That shapes the year on Elbow Lake.
The access position is unclear from public sources. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Moose Lake at 1.5 km is the sensible second choice. Rules at Elbow Lake are worth checking on the day.
