Washa Lake in Nipissing District: How and When to Fish It

• Overview

Washa Lake stands in Nipissing District, Ontario. This is rolling bush ground. It runs to roughly 16 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. A shoreline of some 1.9 km keeps the choices simple. Compared with other Ontario water on our list, it sits high. Supplies mean a trip to Huntsville, 45 km off. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.

• Where to Fish on Washa Lake

Nothing in our records gives a depth for this one. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Species logged across Nipissing District include smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch and pumpkinseed. The county list is broader than any single water. Washa Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.

• Seasonal Patterns

The range across the year is -13°C to 18°C. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. In an average year the thaw lands around late April and the freeze near late November. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Washa Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.

• Tackle & Baits

No public source sets out the position on this bank. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is a campsite 900 m from the water. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. For a change of water, Brule Lake is 1.2 km distant. Check the position at Washa Lake before loading the car.
