A closed sky with even light today, with a steady SW wind with the glass holding level. Fish at Bear Lake should hold close to points where shallow meets deep. Not a day the forecast likes; the night keeps a flicker of interest. Lower the pace and stay patient. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

In Ontario, Bear Lake falls inside Nipissing District. It sits at 446 metres above sea level. At about 30 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The whole outline is near 3.4 km, and most of it is walkable. Compared with other Ontario water on our list, it sits high. Nearest place of any size is Huntsville, 48 km away. No border sits close enough to matter.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Nipissing District records list smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch and pumpkinseed among the fish reported. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Read Bear Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
The year swings from about -13°C in January to roughly 18°C in July. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around late April. Climate averages put the opening at about late April and the closing near late November. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. On Bear Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. A campsite lies 1.2 km away for anyone staying over. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Should this one be busy, Hanes Lake is 0.5 km off. Check the current arrangement for Bear Lake.
