A half-covered sky tonight, with a kind SSE breeze on the water with a settled glass. Activity on Vermilion Lake should centre on bays that hold the day's warmth. Make the night the heart of the trip. Make the first hour count and build on it. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Look for Vermilion Lake in the Kenora District part of Ontario. The surface lies 331 metres up. At 8.11 sq km this is proper open water rather than a pond. The perimeter is close to 40 km, and wind can be flat in one arm and rough in the next. It is among the larger waters listed here for Kenora District. 30 km away sits Kenora, the nearest town. Then Vermilion Bay, 86 km, and Moose Lake, 107 km. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Our records hold no depth for this water. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Species logged across Kenora District include northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker and johnny darter. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Vermilion Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Climate records put July near 19°C and January near -18°C. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about mid November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Vermilion Lake.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Conte Lake, 2.5 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Treat access at Vermilion Lake as something to verify.
