Dull, settled light over the water, with a busy SW wind on the open water with the glass holding level. Whatever swims in Upper Head Lake should be near the weed line and any gaps in it. If you must go, go in the night. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Upper Head Lake is listed under Nipissing District, Ontario. The bank is 479 metres above sea level. Roughly 21 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. There is roughly 2.6 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Ontario listings. Beyond it, Haliburton Village at 46 km and Huntsville at 52 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Nipissing District records list smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch and pumpkinseed among the fish reported. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. At Upper Head Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 18°C, while January sits near -12°C. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about late November. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. Expect Upper Head Lake to follow that timing.
Access status is simply unknown for this water. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is camping recorded roughly 900 m off. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Bonnechere Lake, 0.9 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Treat Upper Head Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
