An even grey lid over the water, with steady pressure of wind from the WNW and pressure going nowhere. Whatever swims in Trout Lake should be near points where shallow meets deep. A middling, even day, steady rather than spectacular. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

In Ontario, Trout Lake belongs to Kenora District. It stands 349 metres above sea level. At 2.48 sq km this is proper open water rather than a pond. With 16 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. The town to know is Kenora, 23 km out. Moose Lake follows at 77 km, then Vermilion Bay at 101 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Species logged across Kenora District include northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker, johnny darter and logperch. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. On Trout Lake a short move beats a long cast.
The range across the year is -18°C to 19°C. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near late April. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about late April until roughly mid November. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. Trout Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Meekin Lake sits 2.2 km off and takes the overflow. Check the current arrangement for Trout Lake.
