Clear air and long views across the water tonight, with calm air over the water with the barometer flat. Activity on Trout Lake should centre on the seam between weed and open water. Make the evening the heart of the trip. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Trout Lake is set in Nipissing District, Ontario. It sits at 201 metres above sea level. Surface area runs to some 19.88 sq km, so a boat and a plan are both worth having. It ranks high for size among our Nipissing District listings. Supplies mean a trip to North Bay, 11 km off. The big place round here is Greater Sudbury, 129 km distant. The line between counties passes nearby, which can change who manages the water.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Nipissing District records list smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch and pumpkinseed among the fish reported. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. Read Trout Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
Temperature averages peak at 19°C in July and bottom out at -13°C in January. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near late April. In an average year the thaw lands around late April and the freeze near early December. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. It holds true on Trout Lake more years than not.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. If the gate is shut, Hillside Lake at 6 km is the nearest alternative. None of that is settled for Trout Lake in what we hold.
