Overcast skies today, with a persistent wind from the SW and pressure going nowhere. Give the seam between weed and open water the first hour at Trail Lake. If you pick one session, make it the evening. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Set in Nipissing District, Trail Lake is an Ontario water. The surroundings are lake country bush. Small at around 3 hectares: two anglers spread out cover most of it. Our Nipissing District list holds plenty of bigger water. The closest town, Huntsville, is 42 km away. Then United Townships of Dysart, Dudley, Harcourt, Guilford, Harburn, Bruton, Havelock, Eyre and Clyde, 50 km, and South River, 54 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Open biodiversity records for Nipissing District list smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch and pumpkinseed. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Trail Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Expect July near 18°C and January near -12°C on the long-run figures. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late April. Ice clears near late April and comes back about late November in a typical year. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. On Trail Lake that shapes the whole year.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. Public data shows nothing built here, so treat the whole approach as informal. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Snowshoe Lake sits 0.5 km off and takes the overflow. None of that is settled for Trail Lake in what we hold.
